How a night works

Four screens, start to finish

Everything that happens between opening ChatBridge and meeting someone, in the order it happens.

01

The night goes live

The whole university is online at the same time. For one hour, Cambridge stops being thirty one separate colleges.

Hey, Sam 👋

Welcome to ChatBridge

Thursday Night is liveStart chatting
02

We find you someone

No profiles, no messages, no waiting for replies. Just a few seconds in the queue and you are already talking to somebody new.

03

You talk, face to face

It stops being random about ten seconds in, and if you don't click, you can end the call and meet someone new.

You’re both at Trinity 🎓

You decide what happens next

The good ones don't have to end when the call does. If you both press share you get each other's CRSid, saved to your call log. If only one of you shares, nobody ever finds out.

Why we built it

Your staircase was assigned

Your subject was assigned

Your friend group, more or less, followed

You probably won't meet the people who'll change your life

Footlights has always worked the same way. Put remarkable people in one room, give them a reason to talk, and let the rest happen on its own. Fry and Laurie met that way, and so did half of Monty Python.

ChatBridge is that room for everyone, with no audition and no committee, just the rest of Cambridge on the other side of the screen.

Safety

Verified, private, and easy to leave

Similar to Omegle, but verified and Cambridge exclusive. It is not a dating app. We could get a lot more signups by staying vague about that, and we would rather you knew exactly what you are joining.

Raven only

Everyone signs in with their Cambridge account, so every person you meet is a real student. No outsiders, no bots.

Your CRSid stays yours

It is never shown during a call. You swap contact details only if both of you choose to, after the call has ended.

Report anyone, any time

There is a report button on every call and we read every report. One report blocks that pair from ever matching again.

Questions

The ones everybody asks

When is the first night?

The date is not fixed yet. Everyone on the list hears it first, before we announce it anywhere else.

Is this a dating app?

No, and we are not being coy about it. We could get more signups by staying vague, and we would rather you knew what you were joining. It is one to one video chat with other Cambridge students, and you swap details only if you both want to.

Do I need a CRSid to join?

Not for the waitlist, any email works, so incoming freshers can sign up now. You will need your Cambridge login to use the app itself.

Do I have to download anything?

No. ChatBridge runs in your browser on a laptop or a phone, so you just open the link and sign in.

What if it is awkward?

It is a little awkward for about ten seconds, and then it is not. Everyone on the other side signed up for the same thing, and you can end a call whenever you want.

Who is behind it?

Jude, who graduated last year, and Elias, who is still at Cambridge. We built it because we kept meeting brilliant people in our final weeks who we should have met in our first.
