About ChatBridge and these terms
ChatBridge (chatbridge.chat) is a platform where Cambridge students meet over random 1-to-1 video calls during scheduled events. It is run independently by two people, a current student and a graduate of the University of Cambridge, reachable at team@chatbridge.chat.
These terms are an agreement between you and the people who run ChatBridge. You accept them when you set up your profile, and we record the date and the version you accepted. If you do not agree with them, please do not use ChatBridge.
Not affiliated with the University of Cambridge
ChatBridge is an independent project run by a current student and a graduate of the university. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by the University of Cambridge or any of its colleges. Raven login is used only to check that you are a current Cambridge student.
Who can use ChatBridge
- You must be a current Cambridge University student with a Raven account
- You must be 18 or over
- You may only use your own Raven account and CRSid, and you may not share your account
You are responsible for what happens through your account.
Private events are the exception. A private event is one we set up for an organiser, joined with an invite link rather than Raven. Anyone with the link can take part, so people at a private event are not verified as Cambridge students. You must still be 18 or over, everything below in these terms still applies, and you may be removed or banned in the same way. Private events keep their own separate matching, so you are never matched between a private event and the rest of ChatBridge.
The service
During scheduled events, ChatBridge matches you with another student for a live video call. Calls are live only: we never record or store video, audio, or in-call chat messages. After a call, you can both choose to swap CRSids. At a private event there is no CRSid swap: you simply see each other's names.
ChatBridge is free. Events run at the times we schedule, features may change, and we do not promise the service will always be available.
Rules of conduct
On ChatBridge you must not:
- Show nudity or sexual content of any kind
- Harass, bully, or intimidate anyone
- Use hate speech, threats, or incitement of violence
- Do anything illegal, or share illegal content
- Record, screenshot, or otherwise capture the other person or the call
- Share another person's personal information without their consent
- Impersonate anyone or use an account that is not yours
- Attempt to break, overload, scrape, or automate the service
- Create or use another account to get around a timeout or ban
We can remove access for behaviour that harms other users or the service even if it is not on this list.
Moderation and enforcement
You can report the other person during any call. A report ends the call for you immediately, goes to us for review, and means the two of you will never be matched again. Repeated reports from different people lead to an automatic suspension while we review.
An automated check for explicit content also runs during calls. It works entirely in your browser and no image ever leaves your device. If it detects something, the other person on the call may be asked to confirm what they saw, and a confirmed incident leads to action on the account.
Breaking these rules can lead to a temporary timeout or a permanent ban. If your account is blocked, you can submit an appeal from the page you see when you log in, and we review every appeal.
CRSid exchange and off-platform contact
After a call you can offer to share your CRSid. It is shared only if both of you opt in; otherwise nothing is shared. What you do with someone's CRSid, and anything that happens off ChatBridge (messages, meetings, anything else), is between you and them. Take the same care you would with anyone you have just met. We are not responsible for the conduct of other users, on or off the platform.
Availability, suspension, and ending the service
ChatBridge is a free service provided as available, with no promise of uptime. We may change, suspend, or shut down the service, or any part of it, at any time. We may suspend or ban accounts that break these terms, as described above. You can stop using ChatBridge at any time and can delete your account from the Edit profile page (or by emailing us); what deletion removes and keeps is described in the Privacy Policy. Deleting an account does not undo a ban: a banned person who returns is still banned.
Disclaimers and liability
ChatBridge is provided as is, without warranties of any kind. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for the conduct of other users, for anything that happens off the platform, or for indirect or consequential losses arising from your use of the service.
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for anything else that cannot be excluded or limited under the law of England and Wales. Nothing in these terms affects your statutory rights.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. The version date at the top of this page identifies the current terms. If we make a material change, we will flag it in the app and may ask you to accept the terms again.
Governing law
These terms, and any dispute about them or about ChatBridge, are governed by the law of England and Wales and subject to the jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
